I like this internet thing because I can connect with people over some thing or another.

I’ve said it loads of times now, but my friends are the most boring people I follow online. That doesn’t mean I don’t like them, it means I don’t find their posts that interesting.

I use the internet for seeking out people to discuss stuff that I don’t have real life people to talk about it with. Like LOST or Valient Thorr or No Agenda.

In fact, the fun of the internet for me has always been connecting with people who post interesting things, not in communicating with people who I can call on the phone if I want to talk to them. And you get to know these posting strangers in some sort of way through what they post, and then they become a real part of your life.

I have people online I’ve known for years who I’ve never actually met. I can tell you their kids names, their pets names and all about those parts of their life they’ve chosen to put online.

I think last time I posted something to this effect I got called “elitist”. Because I basically don’t enjoy these things anymore once they become popular enough that your mom has an account.

Facebook right now is only useful for me in that people are posting info about gigs and parties I need to go to. So my social life is organized there. I click “maybe” on every invite I get and I get a list of possibilities for things to do in return.

I do check my friends status updates regularly. I have a lot of friends in different cities/states/countries and I can keep up with them there. So I have a sense of whats going on with them even if i don’t say hi. And if I do want to, I can do that there too.

Last night I was chatting with an old flame from roundabout 1985 or 6. And while I was doing that someone else posted he was at a show I forgot about. So I said my goodbyes and went out to socialize with real life people.

That’s really all I use it for.

My feeling is that all this clutter they are adding will drive people away. But then they put up with all kinds of bullshit at aol and myspace for years after I was out of there.

I’m a fan of people using what suits them. I like to post random thoughts and pictures and sometimes do long narratives. I like tumblr because it gives me that freedom without messing with any code. And i can connect with strangers over topics.

I like twitter. Because its fast. 140 characters, this is what im doing boom. sends to my facebook so I dont have to mess with it at all and all my real life friends who only facebook and won’t even go to look at my site anymore see my status updates and respond. and i respond back there where they like to do that.

I have zero use for Google +. People keep saying that will change but I hope, instead, we move past this “social networking era” and get to whatever’s next already.
