But now its just a popularity contest.
I hate that people who are reblogging topherchris and whatever’s hot on youtube today are more popular than people who create original content.
Used to be we were all making our own tumblelogs with our own character about the things we cared about, now its a lot like the email fwds I never wanted but people new to the internet thought were ‘funny’ and sent me anyway.
I remember people getting oddly fixated on # of followers, which I never cared less about, mostly because originally my viewers were my friends who were visiting my web page, and not on tumblr anyway.
I remember all the fuss when ‘like’ happened and people wanted you to reblog because if you reblog the popular stuff you essentially get on the list new people find followers in.
My fave tumblelogs are people. People I’ve never met who’ve shown me a bit of their lives. Their fave foods or bands or tv shows. I know their names, I know thier pets, I know what their reaction will be to certain things I post.
I don’t know any of the popular people but to me, those tumblelogs look like the kind of thing that would turn up in my email from someone who just got on the internet. I’d throw it away politely instead of telling them not to send me crap like that anymore so as not to discourage them from browsing around and seeing what the wonderful world of the internet really has to offer.
